In 2015, Henk Helmantel celebrated his seventieth birthday. The first edition of this book was planned for the same year, with the working title: Helmantel 70.
That was almost five years ago, and the first edition has sold out. We have decided to reprint the book with a number of small alterations and improvements. About twenty paintings have been replaced due to considerations of taste and in order to add more recent work to this gallery of honour. Or to put it another way: This is Helmantel 70+.
Henk Helmantel (1945) was born in Westeremden. This son of a market gardener, who stared open-mouthed at the remarkable paintings by Rembrandt when he visited a museum for the first time, knew one thing for sure. He would become a painter. He attended the art academy in Groningen and diligently set himself to work in his studio, day after day. Helmantel became one of the greatest painters in the country.
The lion’s share of this book is made up of more than 190 paintings by Henk Helmantel. In addition, we take a look at his famous home and workplace: Museum Helmantel, as well as the collections that it houses. A unique insight into a life of art, wonder, construction, painting and collecting.
